Plantastic Survivors:
My Favorite Die-Hard Plants, Real and Faux

The greenery trend has been with us for quite some time now, so if you are like me, you have tried (and possibly failed) to add some houseplants to your home. I didn’t think that it would be challenging to keep a few plants alive, but it turns out that there is a lot more science involved in caring for plants than I expected!

If you’ve ever received a stunning potted orchid as a gift, only to find yourself left with a couple of dry twigs that seem doomed never to bloom again a few weeks later, you know just how fickle plants can be. However, my determination to have some calming, air-filtering plants in my home led me to discover that some plants actually thrive in spite of neglect!

So, here is a list of my favorite resilient plants that even the most inexperienced gardener can keep alive. And if this still seems too daunting a task, I am also throwing in some fabulous faux options for those days when you want a little greenery without the commitment.

1. Snake Plant (Sansevieria)

First is the snake plant, affectionately known as "Mother-in-law's Tongue." This hardy plant is one of my absolute favorites. With its sleek, upright leaves that can grow quite tall, the snake plant adds a touch of elegance to any space. One of the best things about this plant is its incredible adaptability. It thrives in low light, making it perfect for dim corners of your home. It’s also highly tolerant of neglect, requiring watering only when the soil is completely dry—ideal for those of us who might forget to check in on our green friends!

Not only is the snake plant low-maintenance, but it’s also an air purifier, filtering out toxins from the air. It can also convert carbon dioxide into oxygen at night, making it a unique choice for bedrooms. The snake plant is a stylish and functional addition to any home, and I love how it stands strong, no matter the conditions.

2. Zanziber Gem (Zamioculcas zamiifolia)

Another treasure in my collection is the Zanzibar Gem, also known as the ZZ plant. With its glossy, dark green leaves, this plant is not just beautiful but also incredibly forgiving. It thrives in low light and can go weeks—yes, weeks—without water. This makes it the ultimate low-maintenance companion, perfect for busy days when I might forget to water my plants.

The ZZ plant’s resilience is impressive; it can tolerate drought, low light, and even some neglect. Its unique, waxy leaves reflect light beautifully, adding a touch of shine to any room. Plus, it’s great for improving indoor air quality. I love having a ZZ plant in my space, knowing that it will thrive even when life gets hectic.

3. Spider Plant (Chlorophytum Comosum)

The spider plant is such a delightful addition to any home! Known for producing adorable "babies" or offsets, it’s incredibly adaptable. The long, arching leaves are striking, especially with the tiny plantlets that dangle from the parent plant.

Spider plants thrive in bright, indirect light but are also forgiving if placed in lower light conditions. They’re known for their ability to purify the air, making them a wonderful choice for living rooms or bedrooms. I love how easy it is to propagate; simply snip off a baby and place it in water until roots form.

4. Pothos (Epipremnum Aureum)

No list of tough plants would be complete without mentioning Pothos. This lovely vine with heart-shaped leaves is one of the easiest plants to care for. It does well in various lighting conditions, from cozy corners with low light to brighter areas with indirect sunlight. Pothos is particularly forgiving; it doesn’t mind if I forget to water it now and then. In fact, it prefers to dry out between waterings!

What I love most about Pothos is its versatility. You can let it trail down from a shelf, hang it in a basket, or even train it to climb a trellis. The cascading vines create a lush, vibrant look that can transform any space into a green oasis. Plus, Pothos is known for its air-purifying properties, making it not only beautiful but also beneficial for my indoor environment.

5. Cacti and Succulents

For a bit of arid charm, cacti and succulents are my go-to. These plants store water in their leaves, which means I can go on vacation without worrying about them wilting. Their unique shapes and textures also add an interesting dimension to my decor.

I particularly enjoy creating little succulent arrangements in decorative pots. There are so many varieties to choose from, each with a distinct look. Some have vibrant colors, while others boast intricate patterns. Plus, they require minimal care: just a little sunlight and occasional watering, and they thrive!

One of my favorites is the jade plant, known for its lush, round leaves and thick stems. It’s said to bring good luck, which adds an extra layer of charm to my collection.

6. Aloe Vera

Aloe vera isn’t just great for soothing sunburn; it’s also super resilient. It flourishes in bright light and needs minimal watering, making it so easy to care for. Its spiky, fleshy leaves add a cool aesthetic, and I love the idea of having a plant that’s both beautiful and useful.

Beyond its decorative appeal, aloe vera has numerous health benefits. The gel inside its leaves can be used to treat minor burns and skin irritations. Knowing that I have a handy remedy right at my fingertips adds to my affection for this plant.

7. Rubber Fig (Ficus Elastica)

Last on my list is another firm favorite! With its striking, glossy leaves, the rubber fig is a stunning addition to any room. This plant is versatile, adapting well to different lighting situations, from bright spots to lower light areas. It’s also forgiving when it’s not watered regularly, making it a fantastic choice for busy individuals.

The rubber plant can grow quite tall, making it a statement piece in any home. I love the way it brings a touch of the outdoors inside, and its air-purifying properties are a bonus.

8. Faux Foliage

If you still just can’t be bothered with plant care, realistic faux options save the day. The artificial plant market has (thankfully) developed a lot in recent years, offering a large selection of incredibly lifelike and affordable options. This allows the enjoyment of greenery without the upkeep!

My Favorite Faux Picks:

  • Silk Fiddle Leaf Fig: This beauty adds drama to any space and needs no care at all. It’s perfect for making a bold statement in a living room or entryway.

  • Artificial Succulents: These come in various sizes and shapes, perfect for adding a bit of desert flair without the hassle of watering.

  • Fake Ferns: Lush and vibrant, artificial ferns can bring a forest vibe to any home. They’re fantastic for creating a green oasis in a tired corner.
